Behind The Song: Motion

Tuesday, January 30, 2018

Have you ever used an expression or phrase, but used it in the wrong way? I do it all the time. I once purchased a t-shirt with what I thought was a pretty cool saying. On the front of the shirt, in stylized typography, were the words “A rolling stone gathers no moss.” Now, according to my own translation of this idiom, a rolling stone was a good thing! I didn't want to gather moss because that would mean my life is stagnant and stuck. I wanted to be moving forward. The problem is, that’s not what this is saying means at all. Publilius Syrus, the original author, was trying to say that rolling stones never grow roots in one place because they’re always straying from responsibility and commitment. These are definitely not the kind of attributes that someone who is in step with God should be exemplifying! I think I’ll stick with my translation.

Though that phrase may not accurately communicate a Christian’s proper perspective on life, the concept still applies. We should be people who are moving forward, ever progressing in our walk with God and allowing that process to positively mold and shape us into who He desires us to be. We should find ourselves in step with His motion, not our own. This is what our song Motion is all about.

Move My Heart Like Your Heart Moves

The ultimate goal of being in step with God is that we would be more conformed to the image of Jesus. In the eighth chapter of Romans, we read how God works in our lives to this end:

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.” Romans 8:28-29 [NIV]

The “good of those” that Paul, the author of Romans, is talking about is to be more like Jesus. In other words, if you find yourself walking, talking, and acting more like Jesus throughout the course of your life, you’re in step with His motion!

When You Speak I Will Lean In, I Walk In Truth

As exciting as it is to be in step with God, it takes effort on our part. We must work to cultivate a thriving relationship with Him if we are to have this kind of motion in our lives. To hear Him speak requires close proximity to Him. This only happens by spending time in His Word and in prayer daily. David, one of the authors of the Psalms, says this about seeking God and His Word:

“I seek You with all my heart; do not let me stray from Your commands.” Psalm 119:10 [NIV]

Let us seek God with all of our heart and stick to the course of His commandments. When He speaks, let us lean in with our whole being. And after hearing Him speak, let us walk forward towards that truth in obedience.

With You There’s Nowhere To Go But Up

Our relationship with God is an epic journey with peaks and valleys. It’s not promised that everything will go smoothly, but through it all, you’re always on your way up. The Apostle Paul says this about those who are in step with God in his letter to the Philippians:

“Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” [NIV] Philippians 1:6

We can be confident that we’re always on our way up because God is the one doing the work. He is faithful and will complete that good work in you for His glory! And although this process isn’t always easy, as the lyric in the second verse states, He’ll lift us up when we mess up and fall down. He never forsakes those who seek Him.

Whatever your current status is with God, I encourage you to get in step His motion today. With Him, there’s nowhere to go but up!
