For Better or Worse

Matthew 7:24-26 says that “…everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

We used to believe that staying married was easy and possible on our own. Seriously, how hard could it be to continue living with the love of my life and soul mate? We were considered the perfect couple with the cutest kids. Everything looked great when you were looking from the outside in, but the truth is it was falling apart. We had built our life on a foundation of the sand of the world. It became evident that the trials in our lives were happening because my husband and I were actually idolizing our relationship and depending on each other for happiness. We built our lives on the material and tangible things in this life which could quickly fly away.

This mistake was a lesson that we learned the hard way. When my husband and I finally allowed God in our lives He broke us in an incredible, magnificent way. The wake up call shook everything we thought we knew about how we should live, behave in our marriage, and treat our children. We learned that our happiness could not depend on other people, not even each other because we as humans are flawed. In order to have abundant lives we had to start and finish everything in God. He is the only one who wouldn’t fail us. That was a revelation that changed our lives. We no longer were living for the approval of others, but for God. If it didn’t glorify God then why would we continue to do it?

All of a sudden the things and successes we had didn’t matter. The trials we went through brought us to our knees to the point where all we could do is look up. This is when we realized that God can and will use every circumstance in our life to teach us to be dependent solely upon Him. Now our lives are so different since when we first got married. We actually try to implement the Word into our lives (even if we fail) instead of allowing the voice of God to fall without being heard or put into practice. Many of our family and friends think we are crazy, but not one of them can deny the peace and serenity they see in our lives.

So when you feel out of control and the issues in your life don’t seem to make sense because you have done what society and culture says you should have, truly turn to God. For real. Don’t continue to pretend that you know what you are doing which is sand. Just let Him guide your decisions, your speech and your thoughts. He is the rock that won’t fall away. For better or worse, our home is now founded on the rock of Jesus, and I can’t imagine a better place for us to be.
