Giving It Up

Thursday, March 01, 2018

Trusting in a difficult situation is hard; for example during a financial crisis like the loss of a home, job, or car. Maybe it's giving up your security because of a calling God has on your life. A few years ago I asked God to use me more and to guide me to fix my health. So He did something I never expected; He asked me to take a demotion and change jobs! I took a $20,000 pay cut in a period of one month and it was scary! I forgot that when you ask God to do something in your life He works quickly and in a big way!

This happened to a young man in the bible who was well off. He was a “good” man by the world’s standards but obviously, he did not have God because he was the one seeking out Jesus. When he asked Jesus what else he could do Jesus told him…

“Jesus answered, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’ When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.” Matthew 19:21-22

Notice Jesus didn’t tell everyone He encountered to sell everything. In this case, he told the rich young ruler who was very concerned with money. It was the most important thing in his life that he depended on and trusted.

How many times do we find ourselves trusting in other things like money or material items more than God? It’s easy to trust in something that you have some control of; where you spend it, the number of hours you work to make it, etc. It’s not as easy to trust a God you don’t physically see. It’s also not easy to trust Him when you don’t know the next steps He has for you in your life.

This is what Jesus was asking of this young man; to have a reckless faith and follow Jesus, but like me, He was scared! This fear is what stopped him from giving up the worldly things he was trusting in. Remember he was the one who asked Jesus what he could do, but then he didn’t like the answer! Imagine if this young man would have given up everything and followed Jesus; his life would have been so different. His fear caused him to miss out on the blessings God had planned for him in his life.

Think about your own life? What have you asked God for? Have you asked Him for a calling? What does He want you to do for Him? Are you ready to give up something you may be trusting more than God, like your security, your tithe, your time? Let me encourage you, that we all have those “scary” moments. The so-called “sacrifice” I made became a new testimony in my life of better health, more time to serve God, and more time to rest, believe it or not. Be confident in this, when you start to recklessly trust Him in everything, God will do amazing things in your walk.
