Love Like Jesus

Thursday, March 29, 2018

To love like Jesus. Woah, now those are some serious #goals. It will take a lifetime to even scratch the surface. But, where can we tap into this spring of overflowing love that is unconditional and free-giving? How do we “walk in love” when we feel like we are tripping over anger and bitterness at every turn?

There is a beautiful song called A Little Longer by Bethel Music and Jenn Johnson that spoke to me about that love of Jesus. I was singing along to the chorus as loud as possible (in my head) while on the treadmill. Then it hit me. To love like Jesus, I needed to feel the weight of His sacrifice for my life. Let me tell you, it’s pretty heavy.

Can’t Thank You Enough

John 21:25 reads, “There are so many other things Jesus did. If they were all written down, each of them, one by one, I can’t imagine a world big enough to hold such a library of books.” (The Message). Can you even imagine that? If you told me John was Cuban, then I would think he was exaggerating. Not the case, right?

There is so much to be thankful for. Looking back at the past few months of 2018, I’m just amazed at how much God has done and will continue to do. What if this next month we spent the first 5 to 10 minutes of our day thanking Him for all He has done. I wonder if we would even have time leftover to remember to ask for anything else.

What Can I Do For You?

Mary knew exactly what to do when Jesus visited her home. She didn’t make herself busy or distracted by the things that needed to be done in the home. Mary simply came to serve. She was loving on Jesus. It is that same selfless love that we can pour out on others.

Anything we do in response is just an outward declaration that we have decided to follow Jesus. All He asks in return is that we give Him our whole heart. Leave everything behind and follow Him. What will that look like in your life? In my life, it looks like I need to put down my selfish desires and seek to please God. It is a daily surrender to His will and acknowledgment that His way is better than mine. A constant awe of His majesty, power, and creation. In that way, you are loving like Jesus.

My Heart Burns for You

There is an amazing declaration in the song by Bethel: I’ll wait here at your feet; that’s where I want to be. I get chills thinking about that. Can you even imagine being at the feet of Jesus? Would we even have words? Even though we can’t literally sit at his feet as the disciples did, Jesus did leave us with a helper--the Holy Spirit.

And the Holy Spirit is God, whose fruits include love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22 NIV). Here we can easily draw a dotted line from the Holy Spirit to love. So if we want to love like Jesus, we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit who produces the fruit of love through the faith in Jesus.
